Comedy moment of the day: Going to my "Personal Development Plan" meeting with my boss, and him thinking I've worked there for three months. Only two months out, then... 8) At least it's nice to know I'm fitting in quite well - I was a bit worried that
I'd be immiscible in a corporate environment!
Well, having gone the past couple of weeks using win2k on my notebook, certain quantities of weirdness began to arise - I suspect that this was primarily due to me "upgrading" WinMe. So I decided to do a full, clean installation of Win2k - which would hopefully iron out the wrinkles. (ha!) This was less straightforward than you might have thought, but I got there in the end. Needless to say it required me to dig out my old PCMCIA CDROM drive I've had since buying my libretto nearly 2 years ago (a nice little machine, but the 640×480 screen size really kills the machine's usefulness for all but the most simple tasks). But like I said, a little bit of perseverance, and I have a nice clean install, having won back about 3.5Gb of disk space. Which isn't to be sneezed at! Everything's running a lot more smoothly too (well, as smooth as can be expected from Windows!).
I've been having fun over the last few days with "NooToo" - the perl-based mud/talker I developed nearly a year ago. It's nice to look back and compare how I programmed a year ago to how I program now - it's amazing how much I've come along, really. I'm a much better programmer now than I was back then, although not to the same degree as the leap between the original Nucleus code and NooToo (my codename for Nucleus 2 - a from-the-ground up rewrite of the first version). Hopefully I'll be launching that on sourceforge soon enough, too.
The DVDList is still coming along, you can download it from sourceforge now (http://dvdlist.sourceforge.net/). I'm still looking for volunteer coders/documentors/designers/mentors and whatnot, but at least something is available now, and it looks as if I can host the online demo on sourceforge itself. I'm currently adding grouping facilities such that each member can belong to one or more groups, and share DVDs between all groups of which they are a member - unfortunately, this is somewhat non-trivial - but once it's done and out of the way I can move onto new features 8).
I've been listening a lot lately to the new Divine Comedy album, Regeneration. It's pretty fantastic. So far my favourite has to be "Bad Ambassador", with lines such as "I'm not the Pope and I don't want to be/The Archbishop of Canterbury". I won't go on about it any more, music collections and blogs don't mix and can rapidly lead to readers losing the will to live. Besides, what do I know about music anyway? I bought the Hear'say single ferchrissakes. 8)
On that note (a middle C), I shall depart. I daresay I'll be back at some point in the future, but until then, don't forget to tip the poodle.
