A 2001 Retrospective

Posted at 5:09 AM on 6 January 2002

Well, it's been a busy year all in all. Especially November/December which I have no desire to ever repeat again in my entire life, ever, ever, ever. But that was for reasons not particularly related to busyness, even if I was very, very busy. 8)

So. I left Wheel: to join Enron, only to end up back at Wheel: (albeit only temporarily) after Enron became the fastest and largest bankruptcy ever, losing me my job in the process (as well as 1400 other people here in the UK). And in 31 hours or so, I start a new job at Inpharmatica, a biotech startup... I've not been as excited about a job since joining Bluewave in 1996. Cripes, I'm sad 8).

And to top it all, just before the year's end, I became a Dad again, with the birth of Eulalia (photos coming soon - I have quite a few now, but I'm still programming the interface that'll make it all easy to stick them on these pages).

Aaaanyway, we've all passed a lot of water since then. But still, the year 2001 is the focus of the moment (albeit from my sidewards perspective), so I'll concentrate on that for the moment.

So. What have I done, this 2001?
  • I became a Dad again...
  • I was unemployed (albeit for only a few days) for the first time ever...
  • I learned Chess - all over again...
  • I pulled my finger out and finally produced a personal website after several years...
  • I learned a whole heap of new stuff related to computers and gadgetry in general...
  • I saw a number of politicians in the flesh...
So. A bit of a mixed bag, all in all, and not entirely useful. Much like life really...

I wonder what 2002 will bring. Hopefully, lots of good stuff (I can but hope!).

Anyway. Time for the awards. (Well, they're not really awards, but at least it'll remind me of what I liked in 2001).
  • Best Album: Origin of Symmetry - Muse Easily the best album of 2001, this album combines baroque themes with a vibrant, hard-edged contemporary sound. Honourable mentions - Starsailor (yes, this surprised me, too), Daft Punk, The Divine Comedy, and Radiohead.
  • Best Movie: The Fellowship of the Ring - Peter Jackson (Dir) Really quite splendid. It's getting on for a decade since I last read the Lord of the Rings, but watching this bought it all flooding back... A classic movie, even if liberties were taken to bring it in under 3.25 hours. I'll defintely be re-reading the book sometime this year...
  • Best Book: American Gods - Neil Gaiman A memorable highlight this year; I've probably read better stuff, but looking back, I can't think of anything else published this year that has particularly stuck in my mind. Well, at least nothing worth attributing a "Best of 2001" to, anyway.
  • Best Computer/Video Game Serious Sam - Croteam Pure, unadulterated fun, this FPS kept me glued to the computer in a way rarely witnessed in recent times. Kept me plugging away from start to finish, which is the reason why "Black and White" didn't make it here (in the end, I simply didn't have the time to play it properly). "Grand Turismo 3 A spec", and "Grand Theft Auto III" may have been the best PS2 titles this year, but at the end of the day, Mr. Serious pinches the trophy for the PC platform.
  • Best gadget: iPod - Apple A tough one this, but in the end, the iPod pulls through in terms of slinky gorgeousness more than anything else. The Game Boy Advance might have given it a run for its money (or the MC218, or the Wireless Networking stuff, or the S35 DVD) but in terms of tiny, shiney gadgets, the iPod is king. A best-of-breed mp3 player may not be to everyone's taste, but it's capacity to size ratio is second to none (it's about the quarter of the size of a Nomad Jukebox, and only a bit bigger (albeit a lot heavier) than the first generation Diamond Rio 300's. I've even managed to get the tinker working under Windows (thanks to Media Four), a big bonus considering the last Mac I used was a while back...
Anyway, that about wraps everything up for this posting; Here's hoping 2002 turns out even better!

P.S. I notice that Gareth Gates actually turned in a decent performance on "Pop Idol" this evening, and left me quite stunned. They were all pretty good tonight though, even Laura (who was voted off this time around) and it's going to get even harder to separate them over the coming weeks... Rosie will almost certainly be the next to go, but after that... My prediction is Hayley, leaving Gareth, Darius, Zoe and Will - although Zoe and Hayley might be the other way around. I think that Gareth will probably win it thanks to the teeny vote, but Will probably has a more broad appeal... The dark horse is Darius - in my heart-of-hearts I'd like to see him win it, clutching victory from the jaws of defeat; but my head says Gareth. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out.

P.P.S. In case you hadn't noticed, Pop Idol is about the only TV program I actually watch these days (unless you count "Thumb Bandits", which isn't actually on at the moment).

I think I have to agree about American Gods. And best of luck for the new job.

glad to say i've missed all episodes of pop idol !!

good luck with the new job !

Hmmm... I think the permissions may have been set incorrectly on the comment db... 8)

Things should be back to normal now...
fingers crossed

Finally Chris! ;-)

So I've been waiting for weeks to add a comment about the low quality of your TV viewing. I'm assuming the program is a dratted docu-soap in the same style as PopStars that we have in Sweden. Ugh! I'm ashamed to know you! ;-)

Anyway - good luck with the new job - sounds fun!

No, it's not like that at all! Far more interactive! Firstly 10,000 prospective "pop idols" were whittled down to about 50, and over 5 weeks two were selected from each pool of ten by a phone vote, leaving ten finalists.

Now, there's a show every week where the person with the least telephone votes gets booted off the show.

There can only be one... POP IDOL! (It's quite addictive, dontchaknow 8) )

it's not addictive, its shite. and I should know - I watch a lot of shite on TV (Eastenders in half an hour!! ;-)

Now Eastenders is shite. It'll all end in tears! 8) Of course, it might be a bit better if Ant & Dec were in it, of course...

Well, it definutely sounds the same format as Popstars here and I have to go with Mike on this one! Frankly I'm disappointed Mr Carline!! ;)

Ermm, that would be definitely then!

"Popstars" over here had a totally different format... (well, I say "totally", but what I really mean is that they're different with a few similarities) and I think Pop Idol is actually miles better. There's no docu-soap crap going on, just singing and voting and Simon Cowell wearing his trousers up to his nipples.

What's not to like? 8)
