news.bbc.co.uk ticker action!

Posted at 3:30 PM on 3 September 2002

Woohoo! The BBC News site has finally sorted out the problem under mozilla/netscape 7.0 that caused the java news ticker applet to not appear! Rah!

Under Linux, if you wanted to see the ticker, you had to use Konquoror or NS4 or something, a fairly non-optimum solution if you're anything like me and like to keep your browsing action in one place using tabs.

By coincidence (or magic, you decide), the BBC news site had an article about the launch of Netscape 7.0 a few days ago, where somebody had commented something along the lines of "how can you claim compatibility when the java news ticker on your front page doesn't work?". Spooky that it all works now, eh?

Speaking of NS7.0, I've been trying it on my Windows box at home and it's surprisingly nifty. OK, I know it's like mozilla with added bloat, but the integrated Email/AIM/ICQ stuff works a lot better than the Microsoft equivalents. In fact, the Netscape webmail stuff actually connects directly to an IMAP server, and is completely spam-free, unlike a certain other service I could mention...

Very pleasing. And there are a few UI improvements that have yet to find their way back into the mozilla branch, so those are nice to have too.

I love mozilla and all, but if you're looking for a one-stop-shop for parents/grannies to surf, IM and read email, then I'd definitely recommend NS7.0 miles over IE/MSN/OE. Definitely the best release from Netscape since version 3 (and that's going back a bit now) and more importantly, significantly better than the Microsoft way.

Crikey.

Problem not resolved in Mozilla 1.2. I still get the "plugin required" message.

It sounds like you haven't successfully installed the java plugin.
