Norah Jones

Posted at 1:01 AM on 2 October 2002

I'm usually very suspicious when I see artists/musicians advertised or "profiled" on the television. But last night I was idly flicking through the channels and ended up catching a few minutes of VH1, who happened to be profiling an artist called Norah Jones. (They're always profiling someone at that time of night - usually the Rolling Stones or Sting. These profiles should be avoided at all costs lest permanent brain damage is inflicted).

To be honest, I was already dimly aware of her existence - they've been pushing the album quite hard through late-night TV advertising (the traditional mark of a release that's almost certainly minging). Add to the fact that she's apparently sold over a million CDs of her album in the USA - the land that thinks "Hootie and the Blowfish" and "N-Sync" are tip-top entertainment - was a further black mark against her in my cynical eyes.

But I have to admit to being surprised. The music sounded pretty good - very good, in fact: a chilled out, bluesy, jazz influenced kind of affair. I made a mental note to check out the album at some undetermined point in the future, and then promptly forgot all about it.

Well, at least until this evening, anyway. I looked up her website, and much to my delight, I discovered 12 live mp3 recordings (at 160 kbps no less!) to download. And so I did, and popped them on in the background.

Wow.

Let's just say I'll be down the record shop tomorrow lunchtime. 8)

I won't bore you with any additional details; after all, you're on the internet aren't you? What are you waiting for?

My descent into Radio 2 territory now seems all but inevitable.

see mp3's are killing the music industry, no one is buying albums anymore...

;-)

I wouldn't say MP3 are killing the music industry. I think the Music industry is killing themselves, I had a 50.00 gift certificate to Sam Goody (cd store) and I didn't buy anything because the prices are too high (17.99-19.99), AND I HAD A GIFT CERTIFICATE!!! Look at the quality albums that have gone platinum ie: Eminem, those songs are downloaded and then the album is boughtm MP3's are just away for us music fans to listen before we throw 19.99 into the trash on a CD that isn't even worth more than one spin.
