Actually, I don't work here...

Posted at 2:01 PM on 4 April 2003

Now that the weather is getting warmer and I don't need to wear a coat when on my lunchtime walk, it has become impossible for me to go into a record shop and not be mistaken for a member of staff. This afternoon, I cut through the Virgin Megastore on the corner of Tottenham Court Road/Oxford Street and was stopped twice. I was in there for less than a minute.0

I must have missed my calling in life.

[0] This actually happens a lot. And it can be any record shop. Even in other countries.

Curiously, twice in the last three weeks, I've had the same thing happen to me in Forbidden Planet. Which is both stupid on the part of the enquirers and annoying to me when you look at the people who actually do work there....

At a black tie dinner a couple of years ago I was accosted by a large lady who insisted that she was "one sorbet short". I said "I beg your pardon" she replied "I'M ONE SORBET SHORT". I thought afterwards that this is bound to happen when everyone is dressed as a waiter.
