I love RSS/RDF feeds. I really do. (see my "rdf feed" link at the top of this page). And NetNewsWire is the weapon of choice in this regard - unfortunately, it's only available on the Mac. Luckily, there are other RSS aggregators (if you want to use the official term) available for other platforms, like straw for Linux users and FeedReader for Windows users.
So. Why use an aggregator? Well, if you read a lot of sites like me, then it can be quite tedious to visit every site in turn to see if any new articles have been posted. If a site provides an RDF feed (e.g. BBC News, or Slashdot) an aggregator can periodically scan them and inform you of any new stories as and when they're posted.
Very nifty.
