If you are considering buying this game, DON'T.
Millions of people can be wrong. Quite simply, this is the worst game I have ever played (and in my 22 years of gaming, that's is quite an achievement).
I have never returned a game in my life. I've come close a couple of times, but have never actually gone through with it. Not this time. This game will be returned.
What's wrong with it? Unfair controls. Appalling camera. "AI" that completely misses the "I". Shockingly poor graphics - The original's were better, ffs. When the only redeeming feature is its licensed soundtrack, you know you're in trouble.
Really, really awful.
Tragic, really, as some of the ideas are actually quite good. But it's quite telling when the game-proper's single-best moment is a commodore 64 loading screen before it starts.
If this comment makes just one person reconsider their prospective purchase, I have succeeded.
If games were films, this would be "Police Academy: Mission to Moscow". Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful.

I enjoyed GTA 3 on the PS2, and have a feeling that Vice City would be fine on that. I'm really talking about the PC version, the controls really stink, which makes the game needlessly frustrating.
I was pretty furious with the game when I wrote my "review", completely losing my rag with it. I was quite enjoying it up to that point. So it's probably not worst-game-ever, but the remote-controlled helicopter sub-mission certainly is. I can't remember the last time a game made me scream with frustration at the top of my lungs.
And because I'm such a pathetic loser, I was playing it again last night (not having had a chance to return it) and was again quite enjoying it. I've just ignored the helicopter mission for now.
The graphics are also a lot better if you up the resolution and switch off the frame limiter - still a bit choppy but nowhere near as bad, surprisingly enough.
But I'd definitely recommend a try-before-you-buy. It's much more linear than GTA3, and aside from the 80's twist, probably isn't worth it unless you can pick it up cheap (£20) like I did...
Oh my goodness gracious, I cannot belive my eyes. Heresy was a crime in the past and should be again after some of those comments.
Accepting the fact that you are slating the PC version and accept that the PS2 version may be better, I would like to make the following comment. Grand Theft Auto Vice City is the best game for the PS2 by far. As a very indifferent and lathargic gamer in general, with little patience and a low boredom threshold, this game has completely captivated me. I have had the game for about three weeks now and have not even stated a mission yet!!! It is far too much fun going around causing general havoc! I was a fan of GTA3 anyway, and all the cheats just make the gameplay more enriching. But with even more cheats for this version, the potential for chaos is even greater! Granted this is probably more of a detrement to my character than anything else, but nevertheless the game is amazing.
The only problem with the game is that there aren't enough hours in the day to get my fix. I have had to start getting up earlier for work just to get more.
You'll have to take my word for it that I am not normally this sad with a game. And that the game is tremendous!

Anyway. Dear John. I think you'll find there isn't such a word as "lier". Maybe you mean "liar"? Which would be inaccurate as I was only expressing an opinion.
To be honest, my ire was mainly reserved for the RC helicopter mission, which is impossible to play on a PC keyboard. Truly shocking game design, and definitely the worst, most frustrating thing I've ever seen in a PC game.
The rest of the game isn't too bad though. But hardly anything to shout loudly about, unless you're an imbecile.
Hey Vice city is not a bad game ok.Yah wow the graphic's suck does it matter in some cases yes but in this case not really because. The game is massively large I hope you relize how hard it must have been for people to make this game. Bottom line is Grand Theft Auto:Vice City is a awesome game with all the things you can do.
By the way the reason why i posted this is because of that dum ass chris I was reading his review and it just piss's me off when I see people making fun of one of the best games.
This game is nowhere near the best game on ps2, i agree with chris, it sucks and is meant to be for pc. But the problem is it is absolutely well better on pc, i disagree that the controls are bad on the pc apart from the helicopter which i am used to anyway, and also helicopter controls are shit on ps2 aswell. You can play ur own music, u can pause the game when u type cheats in, and keyboard+mouse is the way its meant to be played. The only thing pc vice hasnt got what ps2 vice has got is more realistic graphics. But all that is about to change as pc is getting a patch to make graphics same as xbox so see ya l8r PS2.
PS2 is lame compared to xbox but xbox is not as good as pc. Overall PC is the best then xbox then gamecube (only the games are better) and then PS2.
Anyone who disagrees with me is an ultimate newbie, seriously ask any reviewer on gamespot they'll say what i said. Plus PC users have waited longer than lame sony users and deserve the better graphics more. Now back to why i think vice city is not the best game on PS2. For one, it is ONE of the best and not THE best. You aren't considering games like Final Fantasy series and True Crime:Streets of LA which kicks rockstar games ass, and what about the game that ps2 is all aboout called SOCOM US NAVY SEALS. I rest my case. Now why i think it isnt the best game ever made. 5 games prove my theory. Halo, Max Payne 2, come on even Enter The Matrix is better than vice and it took me 3 days even for the hacking missions, and the lamest game ever still beats vice city and that game is called The Sims, and finally a game that is better than vice city is also GTA 3. Before you question why i like GTA 3 better, consider that there were more missions in GTA 3, GTA 3 was a lot better for messing around on than vice, The AI on GTA 3 is much better and the characters on 3 are better. Only reason i didnt like GTA 3 was because of no speech for vercetti.
Firstly, the PC version of GTA:Vice City is far far superior to the PS2 graphically, audio wise, gameplay wise - the first: it supports high resolutions and 32-bit colour - if you have a system that can cope with it (which I luckily do) then run it @ 1600×1200 32-bit colour, frame limiter off and then get a helicopter and fly above the city - with max view field on. Its amazing. Also - the PC offers levels of detail on cars, roads, buildings that the PS2 just cant come close to. Understandably - its mainly to do with the fact that the PS2 does not have 128/256mb of video ram to store textures in, or a hard disk to temp them onto (as bought anyway).
The audio is much better - you can set up your own radio station by importing MP3's.
Gameplay - admittedly not much different from the PS2 but the additional graphic detail and resolution makes it feel more fluid and involving. Plus you can fully customise the controls.
I have played the PS2 version extensively, and I thought it looked amazing, but its pretty poor when compared to a high spec PC version. And before anyone says "yeah but you have to spend 10 grand on a system to run it at full whack". You dont. I dont know how Rockstar have managed to make it run so well on mid range machines to be honest. My spec is Athlon XP 2500+, 256mb Radeon 9600 PRO, 1gb pc2700 DDR RAM, 2×250gb SATA HDD - cost me about £900 including VAT. Bought the bits and put it together myself. No monitor - but even so, thats still a mid range PC.
I am also going to totally agree on the RC helicopter - its driving me crazy. I have never seen it on PS2 having only mainly driven round like a lunatic a lot on that as it was at a mate's house. But I cant even get the bloody thing to move forwards!
Vice city is a good game in and of it's self, however the pc version sucks. If you can get it to work that is. By some fluke I got it to work then I had to reload my sys, after I got it back up and running vice city would not work at all. the tech suport for this game is terriable. Whats with these game manufacures not only makeing games work with some sys and not others. If a persion has a relativly new sys then a game should work. People dont have the money to buy the latest and greatest every other day.
Haha you are weird, theres a guide to making the graphics better than PS2 version, as for the controls you can hit ESC and goto OPTIONS then CONTROLS and DEFINE and you can set the keys yourself.

Hijack - F
You dont need to set your A & D keys though beacuse the mouse is for turning.
As for the RC Helicopter mission its easy if you set:
Move Turret Forward - 8 (NUMPAD)
Move Turret Back - 5 (NUMPAD)
Move Turret Left - 4 (NUMPAD)
Move Turret Right - 6 (NUMPAD)
There you go, Vice City still remains the great game it was on PS2 but can achieve better controls and graphics.

I personally think ur comments r stupid although I do respect ur opinion. In my eye I think u r completely wrong. I have the game and I have heard nothing but good things about the game and I think it has fairly good graphics, especially for being in 3rd person view. Although like most games that r originally made for consoles and then made for computers r quite costly. Besides my computer not running this game at its full perspective it is fun killing ppl jacking cars etc. I think u r one of the few ppl that dont like it.
I am late in reading these comments but I have learned some things
from reading them. I was a PC gamer for years, my
younger friend convinced me to buy a PS2.
This game must be designed for PC because I can't even shoot the guns
much less fight. If people have trouble with the game on PC perhaps the size
of the memory and on board graphics card memory might make a difference.
I will be buying it on PC and using my P4.
It seems fun on PS2 if you just want to get stoned and
steal cars and giggle at not getting caught.
Like half-life on PS2, this is a completely different world.
The annoying analog joysticks, and no first-person view,
is just ridiculous for a hardcore violent
shooter game.
Got to admit though, it is very funny.
My friend gets mad because hookers jump in my car
and I am just pressing all the buttons.
I think the cars I steal has something to do with it.

chris it's a month later and i have caught up to you.
i also agree with fat bob, there is not enough hours
in a day it is so fun.
now that i have experience rampaging,killing,
stealing and robbing,
i now have three places with stashes.
hyman condo being the best.
this is thanks to finding the majority
of the hidden packages.
still, whether it is an rc car race on the beach,
the plane race off the top of north pointe mall,
the rc heli mini-mission at the airport,
or avery's bombing mission, those toys are tricky.
right now i keep practicing in the building
BEFORE i pick up a bomb, and still smoke out.
when i go for it, usually get 2-3 bombs planted
before time runs out.
i still need practice and patience for these
toys. yes they should be easier but this is what
the game is.
i can't believe all the on-line FAQs state how easy
"autocide" is....that dude in the security car
just doesn't wanna die. i have used my humvees,
semi's, rocket launcher. just gotta catch up and
strafe with the uzi.
for now the rc mission for avery is like you said,
on hold as this one is. but i keep having fun.
i think after awhile it will become easier,
i know a 14-yr old who got it on both PC and PS2

it's really fun causing havoc and making $$$$$
when you have figured out all the police bribe,

i'm past the tank and fastest boat missions,
stuck on autocide and the rc heli mission.

Did the RC Helicopter mission on the first sitting, its a piece of piss. Maybe your PC is a bit pants rather than the game - thought GTA Vice tries to change its framerates / resolutions in relation to the machine its running on.
Anyway who on earth bothers with PC gaming surely its one of the most frustrating and pointless past-times currently in the world, ever - buy an x-box, and hack it to bits.
And for the record,
I hate will and gareth, michelle is fat and chas and dave (whatever their stupid names are) really couldnt 'get by.....' as they have no friends, and deservedly so.

OMG i have just played GTA Vice City and i think its bloody awsome folks. The graphics are great, the levels and tasks are challenging in themselves. its so good id buy it again. Why dont so many people like it? because of its bad language and violence? If thats the case for some of you iv got something to tell ya.........................................THATS REAL LIFE FOLKS. the game clearly shows an insight to the 'real' world and its exciting and fun and everyone should have a taste of it for themselves beacause the game ROCKS ma boat man. I so cant wait for Grand Theft Auto 5 to come out! The only obvious difference will be that GTA 5 will be more attractive and more challenging and that i cant wait for.

Well my little rant about that game.
The idea is good. I agree. That's the only good point of the game, with the fact that it can be easily modded.
I've never seen such a bad graphic engine.
I'm been playing that game on pc, and 70% of the time, the texture and the detailed models are not loading. Sometimes i've even driving on nothing. That's just plain crap...
And yes, the controls are bad. Worse than GTA3. and can't be compared to mafia.
Where do i begin? This is quite simply one of the greatest games ever made for any platform. Half life was great fun, Diablo 2, Swat 3:close quarters combat, Hunter 2: The reckoning and The Sims were all titles I hold up there as games that have stood the test of time.
I've always wondered what my dream game would have been like, im not a geek please dont start responding to this to hurl unpractical abuse at me because I will 'end you'. So yes, the game really is remarkable. When I played a cracked copy of GTA III, i was like 'yeah nice game...wonderfuly drawn environments - stunning'. This made me curious about what VICE CITY was all about, and so i purchased a copy from pc world with my hard earned cash and installed the game at home. What did i think ? one word. AWESOME.
this game has it all, well almost everything you'd want in a game. Its not completely non linear but its not far off. I hope San Andreas is a big big improvement cos I can't wait.
Vice city is a game which spans miles of beautifuly drawn 3d land, and you can drive around it in almost any vehicle you can imagine from a pick up truck to a taxi cab to the most lush emotion evoking sports car. Most of the cars are modelled on real cars but the names are different. I dont know what to say about this game, its just amazing. What really adds to the whole atmopshere of this game is the in game cinematics when missions begin...and the radio, the 80s songs are just awesome. I had no idea who 'YES' were/was until i played this game, and i was born in 1978 ! I admit though, where thsi game fails it fails bad but the brilliance of it in other aspects out scores its bad points. ppl moan about the controls, when will you nippleheads actualy put in the hard work to LEARN controls ? look if you cant hack a keyboard go buy a ps2 and play with your toyish console. heh.

I passed that level, but I must admit it took practice.
Plus the Scott MacDowall 100% FAQ helps
tremendously with this and all levels, missions, side missions,
and general accomplishments.
The trick for me was to take out the workers and rent-a-cops
on each floor using the rotor blades, then use my hours and hours
of practice to go back and forth, up and down, and
drop each bomb on it's corresponding floor.
Don't give up on the game Chris!
And if you are thinking of selling it, wait...
it will be worth much more than originally
purchased IF it is the original version.
After the "lawsuit" the game was edited,
and now key gang members and missions are missing.
I am looking for a back-up copy, and it is so hard
to find an original I have thought of...
how much am i willing to spend?
It truly is an amazing game, have patience,
practice-practice, and you'll beat that level.

is a walk in the park after you have finished

Hmm, i think you have personal problems Chris, seriously, i don't know about you, but i run my PC version of Vice City on 1600X1200 resolution. It looks just fine to me. Granted, it's not going to win any prizes for the best graphics ever, as it's engine is getting pretty clunky, but the excellent lighting Vice City has improves the look amazingly. Really Vice City hasn't got all the graphical bells and whistles alot of games have, but it makes up for it in style. As for your critism about controls and camera views. I haven't had any major trouble, I've found the controls on the PC version to be smooth and easy, and i have absolutely no trouble controlling helicopters and the Skimmer seaplane -- let alone cars, if you're a person who appreciates detail, Vice City is a gold mine just waiting for you, but if you're a cynic who only looks at graphics, Vice City will likely dissapoint. My recommendation is get the PC version. If you're 90% of the gaming populace chances are you'll love Vice City. Flame me if you like Vice City-haters. :P But thats my opinion
