I think that people are getting it all wrong here.Whether she is fat or thin, it should all be about the singing.Other people sang better than Michelle but people are now saying 'Thank god that someone normal can win'.
This is very sad, as it is not normal to be overweight (in her case obese) and one of the main problems that the British have is the increasingly high number of overweight youths.
This is causing major health and economic problems and should definitely not be encouraged.Very few people are fat because they are ill: most are because they overeat and don't exercise.
I find it appalling that someone who portrays this is found to be 'brave' and other such things, when she should be made see the truth and start living healthily.

Just so people don't get the wrong impression I'd like to make it clear that I have nothing against overweight people. If you recall there were TWO large ladies in Pop Idol, the aforementioned Fatty from Scotland and also there was Kym from England. Kym actually had quite a good voice (unlike Fatty's nasally whine). Kym also had an engaging personality and knew how to make the best of herself with regard to her physical appearance. By contrast it must be said that Fatty is stone cold pot ugly and about as appealing as the backside of a hippopotamus. I'm sure that if they were honest with themselves most Scotch people would agree with me that she is totally ghastly.
Well I think everyone who has posted bitchy comments should get a bloody grip. Michelle CAN sing, she's not the most attractive bird ever but she can sing. People may think I have been a trifle harsh with regard to my comments concerning Fatty but I am
genuinely concerned that her appearance at a World Idol 2 event would put Britain in a bad light.
I'm thinking that if we start e-mailing Simon Cowell's record company at this early stage then
we may be able to prevent this debacle from occurring. It seems to me that Roxanne in particular would be a far more appealing repesentative for Britain. If any readers of this message are in doubt please let me five you five good reasons why.
1) Roxanne is a fit bird. Fatty, on the other hand, is about as alluring as Elton John's arsehole hairs.
2) Roxanne is refined and sophisticated. Fatty, on the other hand, is a loud and vulgar beer guzzling ladette. A very bad role model for young citizens.
3) Roxanne has a sweet and melodious voice. Fatty's voice is like listening to a pneumatic drill when you've got a hangover.
4) Roxanne is from England. Fatty, on the other hand, is from Scotland. :(
5) Roxanne has a beautiful smile. Fatty, on the other hand, doesn't.
So you see, Roxanne is SUPERIOR IN EVERY SINGLE DEPARTMENT. As I've said before, people from other
countries will be watching this event and Fatty's participation will paint England in a most unfavourable light. It's not enough for us to say "Oh well she's from Scotland actually, that's why she's so awful."
Because, we, in England, might know that Scotch people are generally less talented and sophisticated but citizens in other countries will make no such distinction. They will tar us all with the same brush. The participation of a well fit young woman like Roxanne is what is needed and would make England a very appealing destination for tourists. It might even strengthen our Olympic bid. These things are very important.
I think that next year the Pop Idol results must be done via a regional points system to put an end
to this silly nationalistic voting from the lesser countries.

No there aren't 10 million Michelle McManus fans. 10 million people didn't vote for her. 10 million votes were cast. Most of these votes were cast but multiple voters (how many times did YOU vote for her?), lets say the average number of votes per person was 4 each. that takes the figure down to 2.5 million.
Now, let's say Michelle got 60% of the vote (I REALLY can't see her getting any more than that). from the 2.5 million above, that gives her 1.5 million fans, who care enough to vote for her.
Some people hated Will because they wanted Gareth to win, and people like you are doing it with Michelle. She has a good vioce, and that is the reason she won. Ok like someone said michelle may not have 10 million fans but saying 4 votes for each peron wouldnt exactly work because someone could of voted 3 times whereas someone else could of voted once so if you share that between the 2 of them you get 2 votes each.
So lets say 2 votes for each peron that makes 5 million fans
and lets say about 70% of the vote (since mark only got 30 or something like that) So that would make michelle with around 3 to 3 and a half million fans!

I've been reading everyone's comments with interest. It certainly can't be disputed that Michelle's win has made people think about and reconsider the whole concept of a pop idol. That is no bad thing. Michelle's appearance is one aspect of her, not the totality of what she is. It's as unimportant as the colour of her eyes. Not so many years ago, the accepted wisdom by those who were so called in the know was that white people would never buy music by black artists. Times change. Talent will triumph, regardless of race, religion, nationality, size or social background. When will people realise that? The material issue is that she can sing, can engage an audience and entertain people.
But back to the essential point. I love Michelle's voice - she was one of a few contestants this year who were able to display vocal talents consistently in each genre, showing a real versatility and determination. Her bubbly personality and ability to be herself also appealed to many. This opinion was shared by enough people to make her the pop idol.
As noted by many above, the population of Scotland would make it nigh impossible for her to have won on the strength of the Scottish vote alone. And to try to win a argument about a singer by harking back to old worn and frankly uninteresting arguments about Scotland v England is so passe and futile that it only reflects badly on those trying to do so. They obviously have no other way of winning their argument - ie have no way to articulate their opinion with clarity and conviction let alone facts and truth. And they need to read a history book, if they believe that Scots have not been key in shaping the world as we know it.

Anyway, ignoring one or two illiterate idiots the general consensus seems to be that Fatty
only won due to excessively jingoistic voting by the Scotch nation. Normally I would just
shrug my shoulders and roll my eyes and leave it at that.
However, there is one really big problem. Pop Idol may be over but now Fatty is about to
release a record. I know, I know, what an appalling prospect. This is horrendous news.
We thought Fatty was over but now we're gouing to have to endure her nasally whine and
ugly fizzog all over again. Apparently advance sales south of the border amount to
only fifty copies but unfortunately Scotch sales will be added in so the record will probably
make the top forty. :( Why can't the Scotch have their own charts and not cause problems with
ours? The only consolation is that Fatty's career will be over by March but it could be

Just to set the record straight, I don't have a problem with Michelle being either Scottish or overweight, or her personality. Simply: I don't like her singing voice. That's all. My entire objection in a nutshell. At least she can sing in tune. Much better than most of the other contestants on Pop Idol. (I may also have stated elsewhere that she is also quite ugly, but then so am I -- and it takes one to know one).
But my point is, regardless of how well she can sing in tune, her voice makes my ears bleed. I cringe everytime she goes for a high note. I have to turn the sound down on the telly when she's on in case a particularly resonant shriek shatters my glassware. I simply cannot listen to her sing. Something about her voice grates me up the wrong way, and I can't believe that others haven't noticed it too.
All the same, she won fair and square. More people voted for her than anyone else, and complaining about it isn't going to help. Is she going to have a long and successful career in the music business? No, I don't think so. I could still be proven wrong, but it seems less than likely she'll be troubling the top ten in twelve months unless she really ups her game and learns how to sing from her diaphragm rather than her throat.
Until she manages that, I will regard her in the same light as I do Blazin' Squad and Gareth Gates. I'll just hope there isn't a World Idol 2. (Well done Kurt, btw!)

Well thanks Chris for making your argument without the racist whinings of those such as Paol. I appreciate that your opinion is that Michelle's vocal stylings are not to your liking and that your opinion is not based on ridiculous objections based on her appearance or nationality.
But it is only an opinion, as is mine, and each individual who has posted here. I think we have to remember one essential point - singing and music is entirely a subjective thing. What some people really like can be nothing short of awful to some others. That's why we need variety in our industry - to provide something for everyone. While I detest the likes of Busted and Blazin Squad and S Club and Atomic Kitten, they are obviously fitting some niche and catering to a demand that is out there.And so I accept their existence, and just choose not to buy their music. I suggest that those who don't like Michelle do the same, rather than whinge about it.
I do like Michelle and I like her style of singing. I find it engaging and emotionally moving. I agree she can probaby do with more work in terms of increasing her range and how to present a song, but she never claimed to be professional, and these are things that are learned as artists mature and progress. I hope she manages to do this, as well as choosing to have the right songs and surrounding herself with the right people in order to maintain a successful career. And I wish her all the best in that.

Whoever you are think back to a time when someone said something nasty about you....it isn't very nice is it ? Michelle did not enter Pop Idol to upset people and it was not her choice to win. People from both England and Scotland voted on the night and that is why Michelle won, so don't take it out on her.
Why should anyone care about her appearance, I am sure it is constantly buzzing around her head now that she has been catapulted into the public eye. A bit of encouragement would help.

What matters is that Michelle was not the best singer and due to her appearence she had won the on the sympathy vote. I don't think thats fair on her nor the other contestants. I think Michelle is a really good singer, although not quite the pop idol most had thought of, I think that favourites were a big issue in this year's voting and hopefully she'll succeed.

IF wer look at what the shows about we see that it is called POP IDOL not talent search not Looking for a star but POP idol. Hi, I would just like 2 say that michelle was no way the best singer. I think the whole Pop Idol competition was a fix. What d'ya know as soon as Simon Cowell likes Michelle, all the rivals get voted off. Simon Cowell was the inventor and can do what he likes with the show. The first rival to go was Andy, then Roxanne (who by the way should have won by miles)and Susanne went when she should have at least been in the top three. Then to keep the show still exciting, they keep Sam in till the very last minute, then vote him off. Leaving Michellle to thrash poor, talentless Mark.
Okay. Why do I think Michelle can't sing? After all, I've already pointed out that - unlike some of the others who made it through to the final 12 - she can sing in tune.
I should also admit to exaggerating my opinions somewhat as - let's face it - nobody with any real talent made it into the final three. Which is a great shame. But in a country that can vote Westlife's "Mandy" as "Single of the Year", when the only song we'll be hearing from 2003 in a decade's time is Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful", I should hardly be surprised.
And there's one last thing I should admit. Whilst I really can't stand to listen to Michelle's voice, I genuinely hope she succeeds and does well and wish her all the best. But that two million pound record deal she won will go a long way - she'll certainly not be wanting for a deep-fried mars bar anytime soon, eh? ;-)
But why don't I like her voice? For me, it's simple. For a big lass, her voice lacks a remarkable amount of depth. She tends to warble, and frequently veers into adenoidal territory. That's not to say she won't improve - give it a few years, some decent singing lessons, and her voice might really mature into something special - but right now, I can't see her career lasting that long.
But even more problematic, she never sounds committed to a song. She never elevates it beyond the notes she's required to sing - listen to Britney Spear's breakthrough record, "Hit Me Baby One More Time" - she probably doesn't even have half the voice of Michelle, but her commitment to the vocal is astonishing. It elevates the song to something very special indeed. Michelle has not for a moment indicated she's capable of doing that.
So beyond a week or two at the top of the charts with her first single (and probably album), she's got her work cut out to avoid the path to obscurity beaten by "One True Voice".
And for those of you who think I'm running this site purely for your benefit, please don't post. If the ability to hold an adult conversation is beyond you, don't respond. Your inane comments won't be missed.

It seems that these days to be a pop star and be in the charts all you need to do is be able to sing..the song writing is secondary therefore you get a handful of song writers employed by record companies churning out bland songs for these people..how I laughed when I found out all 3 finalists had recorded the same song so it could be instantly be released by the winner..I hope Michelle manages to lose her weight for the sake of the other passengers on the cruise ships.
Michelle does have a powerful voice, but i personally dont think its very nice to listen to. It is baffling to think that she even made it to the final. The same goes for Mark, he's even worse than michelle(obviously).

Its about having something to say, self expression,originality and longevity in the music industry.If someone is telling you what songs to sing, how to sing them, coreographing your movements and telling you what to wear then your not achieving this. I think I speak for the majority of this countries record buying public above the age of puberty as lets face it the record sleeves of most of the pop stars today are almost interchangeable. Its no wonder all the overwieght people nowa days either keep them seleves out of other peoples way or physically make them selves ill trying to lose there weight or evem worse, try to hurt thereselves. Its becuase people like you lot about apart from the odd few slag over weight people off and make fun of them.
I for one think michelle is an ace singer she is differant and i dont mean that in physical way i mean she has a differant voice to those people out there now who have a singing career.
I am over wieght and it does get to me i do exercise and i do not eat more than i should do, But will the weight go no it wont? Its been decided that yes its a medical problem an yes hopefully fingers crossed i will be able to shake it off now. I have been taunted for ages but am strong minded an dont let it get to me "that much" but it does sometimes. Michelle is strong minded you can see that but coments like this she can do without. Just all grow up and show her respect as you would like people to show you.
