Hot Turkey

For reasons unbeknownst to me, and knownst only to my wife, I am currently about halfway through the process of cooking a turkey. This might be vaguely related to a new freezer being ordered, but I wouldn't want to stake my reputation on it... I don't think it's a special occasion, but then I don't want to make a gaffe just-in-case... :-)

Anyway. I am currently rediscovering the joys of usenet, thanks to the most incredibly lovely newsreader I've ever had the joy to use, Unison. It's totally hoopy and froody.

Also, I've been playing with Musicbrainz which is proving to be extremely handy for reuniting my old mp3s with their metadata. I have a heapload of mp3s I ripped from my CD collection years ago, none with ID3 tags, and so having something that generates an "audio fingerprint" of a track and then queries a database to retrieve the metadata is extremely nifty.

That's not to say it's 100% reliable, or that it recognises every track, but it makes a damned good stab at it, and it's a lot less effort than updating the information by hand, so I'm well chuffed.

One of the interesting aspects about using it though, is that very different tracks produce the same fingerprint. For instance, "My Pink Half of the Drainpipe" (by the Bonzo Dog Band) has the same fingerprint as "Lovesong" (by The Cure). It's all terribly amusing, honest.

Changing the subject completely, I bought a TV card for my computer the other day so that I could convert old videos into DVDs. Although I'm still working on getting my first DVD "done", the quality is pretty good all things considered. But certainly, you're constantly reminded of precisely how crappy the quality of VHS really is. It's dreadful. Eye-bleedingly bad. How could I ever have watched these things?

Fortunately, technology can leap in at this point and tidy things up a tad, but even so, it appears to be more of an art than a science. Something I'll get better at with time, one would hope.

Anyway. The turkey continues to cook, and I've still got plenty of time to decide on vegetables. The only given is cauliflower with white sauce. Oh, and peas. And carrots. And roast potatoes. Hmm. Maybe some brocolli, I'll have to see if we have any though... The menu writes itself really, doesn't it?
