So, since the launch of my "updated back end" last week, I've been allowing comments back on my site. And the spammers have been plugging away ever since -- 372 times so far (to be precise). But much to my delight, all but one (which I rapidly caught manually) have been filtered out.
This is extremely excellent, and testiment to the powers of the latest version of Movable Type. Now, this site had been kicking around on a very elderly version of said system, and used (by necessity) a plugin called 'mt-blacklist.cgi' which, whilst great at the time, couldn't really scale very well with the onslaught of spam. I kept mt-blacklist long after it was sane to do so, but I didn't fancy upgrading MT as I'd hooked all sorts of my own things into the version I was running and didn't want to port it all.
After a particularly nasty bout of spam nearly a year ago, I simply turned comments off. And pretty-much gave up blogging, too.
Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, I finally decided to bite the bullet and completely rewrite my custom tweaks and site backend. It's now a lot different, and orders of magnitude faster, as the filesystem doesn't need to be traversed any more, nor XML files parsed. Yay!
So, so far, so good.
Obviously you are more precious to the spammers than me, as I get next to none. Actually, these days I really don't get any.
Considering you are important to spammers, can I sell you these pills, based on a stock tip I will sell you, but no before giving you one meeeeeeeel-eeeeeon dollars. As my great uncle, who was etcetc.
