Well, whilst MT is doing an admirable job cutting down on the old blog spam, it's not entirely eliminated it, and I'm still getting a half-dozen or so spams getting through each day (out of a couple of hundred attempts -- spammers are persistent little scrotes, aren't they?).
So, I spent an hour or so last night working on a simple 'captcha' -- a question that is difficult for bots to answer correctly.
Mine is very simple -- you just need to type the answer to a simple maths question, e.g. "what is two add two take-away one equal to?" (the answer here being '3'). I added an example to let people know to express the answer in digits rather than words, unlike the question.
The best thing is that even if a spammer fills it in, there's still a 95% chance the comment will be rejected anyway. I'll be interested to see if spam levels are reduced now I've added it.
Yay for technology!
I'm still looking for ways to improve the system and make it friendlier, so if you think of anything do let me know. Either by email, or the comments form, assuming you can get it to work... :-)
